Resources for Nature Connection
The Earthroots Kinship Calendar
My nature-connected friends at the Earthroots Field School have created a calndar that is both a work of art and a tool for deep awareness and nature connection. While the calendar they created is in tune with the rhythms of the natural world in a particular ecosystem, that of Orange County, California, they also have a version that can be customized for wherever you call home.
In their words: The Earthroots Kinship Calendar was designed to guide people to live in relationship with the living and nonliving beings (kin) that share the local environment of Coastal Southern California. This unique calendar is based on lunar and solar cycles, tracks seasonal rhythms, constellations, plant and animal observations, harvest and planting times for food and craft materials, animal migration patterns, and more. Each moon time on the calendar (new moon to new moon) is named after something observed locally during that time. The seasonal notes for each moontime can be used to orient oneself to the time of year.
Inspiration for the calendar grew from the Indigenous perspective that the natural world is not a resource, but rather a deeply respected relative who cares for us, and whom we care for in return. The observations noted are approximate and vary by location and year.
One of our goals in creating the Kinship Calendar was to inspire more people to become aware of what’s going on in their local ecosystems. This calendar is offered as a free digital download, and for purchase as a printed poster. Additionally, Earthroots is encouraging people around the world to make their own Kinship Calendar with a downloadable template and step by step instructions.

Expand your nature awareness through birds with Kristi Dranginis, Bird Mentor
When people ask me about some beginning steps to deepen their connection with the living world around them, I often recommend they start learning about and paying attention to 2 things- the plants and the birds. Because seeds are blown by the wind and birds have wings, plants and birds can generally be found almost everywhere on the planet, from remote wilderness to city streets.
The more we know about something, the more we notice it. The more we notice things in the living world rather than on screens, the more connected we feel, the calmer our nervous systems, and the greater our sense of health and well being. Nature, quite literally, heals.
If deepening your knowledge and understanding of birds appeals to you, I highly recommend a course with my friend Kristi Dranginis. Use this link to sign up for a free online class with for free classes and to learn about her advanced classes. She is an avian rock star, and her course about bird song changed the way I heard the world around me.

There are a growing number of gatherings, events and schools focused on ancestral, wilderness, and land-based living skills, and nature connection.
There has never been a better time to get out there and take advantage of them.
